2006 Provincial Skills Competition:
SIAST Kelsey Campus, Marca College, and Prairieland Exhibition Park were the hosting sites for the 2006 Provincial Skills Competition that was held March 16 – 17, 2006. The competition showcased skills and talents of 304 young people from across the province. A total of 28 elementary, high school and post-secondary institutes participated in 28 trade and technology related areas. With the support of 275 technical committee members, judges, sponsors, and 80 teachers from across the province helped contribute in making the event the success that Skills Canada Saskatchewan is becoming and growing in numbers of participants each year. Each year the Saskatoon Home Builders Association puts on their annual Home Styles show. The event brings in an estimated 30,000 people that come and view the newest, latest in decorating, building products, etc. pertaining to the homeowner. This year Skills Canada Saskatchewan was offered the opportunity to showcase 8 of the competition areas during the Home Styles event in Hall A at the Prairieland Exhibition Park. The exposure and the awareness of having the competition areas in this type of setting is very successful. The competition areas included: Cabinetmaking, Carpentry, Electrical Wiring, Plumbing, Worksite Safety, Robotics, Small Powered Equipment, and Spectrum Challenge. The carpentry and electrical wiring competition areas ran the secondary participants on Friday, March 17 and then ran the post secondary on Saturday, March 18th. With the support of the Northern Apprenticeship Committee and Construction Careers aboriginal post secondary students competed in the carpentry and automotive service competition areas. Feedback from one of the post secondary students was very positive and is looking forward to participating next year. Each year the Safety Committee is implemented to ensure all competition areas are following safe work practices. The safety committee went to each competition area and checked for any safety infractions. A summary report will be written up and submitted to Skills Canada Saskatchewan for future competitions. A Safety Award was presented to the Carpentry competition area for ensuring all competitors, committee members, and judges followed all safe work practices. The philosophy of the skills competitions is to reward students for excellence, to directly involve industry in coaching and evaluating student performance, and to keep training relevant to employer needs. The competitions allow students to access the newest technologies, and communicate with industry experts who serve as mentors by showing students that the skills they possess are valuable. The third annual Partnership Breakfast was held on Friday, March 17, 2006 at Prairieland Exhibition Park Hall D 7:30 – 10:30 am.
